East European Study Tour 2009 - Comments from Recent Participants
Zev,
I am rarely at a loss for words, but this time I am. I do not know how to begin to thank you (and Morris) for organizing the outstanding summer seminar in Eastern Europe (which our superb tour guide Agniezska insisted rightly on calling central Europe). The trip, including all its arrangements and the distinguished colleagues on the bus, surpassed any expectations I held. It will take me many weeks to process all I learned and saw. There is no question that seeing the sites of Jewish life and death enriched me personally and professionally; and, as we all know, what we have learned we then share with our students, the next generation.
Thank you for making all this possible. My only regret is that I did not get a chance to spend time with you and Alice. My best wishes for your continued and speedy recovery, warm regards to Alice, and my deepest thanks.
kol tuv,
Pam

Dear Zev,
The EEST was, in a word, one of the finest intellectual experiences I have ever had. It was instructive and deeply moving to see the sights about which I have been teaching for 10 years now. And it was wonderful to meet new colleagues in the field.
I really cannot imagine ways in which the trip could be improved without lengthening it—something which no one wanted to do after two weeks of hard traveling. The one place I wanted to see was Treblinka, but the trip from Warsaw and back was too long. Maidanek was overwhelmingly powerful, as was Auschwitz, and I traveled to Sachsenhausen on my free day in Berlin.
I so appreciate your efforts on my behalf and on behalf of my graduate student, Grant Steele, who will be teaching the Holocaust for a long time to come. He made some valuable connections.
Here’s hoping you are feeling better and that we’ll see you in Boca Raton. I am also interested in the Israel conference.
Kind regards,
Kevin
